Notice how densely forested the approach is. By Maine standards this is an “urban area”. After Alaska, Maine is the most densely forested state in the US. If the runway, taxiway, and parking ramp seem roomy, this used to be Dow AFB, one of three bases in Maine and New Hampshire now converted to civilian use, where the Strategic Air Command kept heavily loaded B-47 and B-52 bombers on watch orbiting in the air as a deterrent to attack by the Soviet Union. Maine is an hour closer by air to Europe than anywhere else in the US, more east than north.

Wow! I don't have exact numbers on it, but having grown up in Sydney, this is the rarest and least common arrival/landing direction. I don't think I've ever in my entire life, I've ever returned to Sydney and landed westbound on the east-west runway. It's certainly a bit more of a unique view this one! From memory I'm pretty much always disappointed with a landing from the south coming north over Botany Bay or Kurnell, especially on international flights. Only once do I remember getting a really scenic southbound landing flying parallel to the CBD on a domestic flight. This video is really a lovely view - especially for the tail end of an international, long-haul, large wide body flight.

6:33 notice how the ailerons went from extending with the flaps back to regular position? Anybody know why the one spoiler on the end is extended? Seems to have happened right as they extended flaps for the last time.
